Beckie Parker

Orient = Ornament = Adornment

The project was initially inspired by a trip to Turkey with an emphasis on looking at ceramics and textiles. In particular the nature of glazed surfaces contrasting against the richness of embroidered fabrics.

Using Knit, Crochet and Embroidery the collection of fabrics echoes the nature of hand painted ceramics and rich Turkish interiors. Plaiting was used with fine yarns to create delicate fabrics that have a saturated colour effect. Crocheted motifs and symbols taken from Turkish imagery were used as embellishments on knitted and crocheted fabrics or trapped in fine transparent knit and embroidered on to. The result is a collection of fabrics that puts an emphasis on integrating machine knit with hand finished techniques designed as investment pieces for womenswear.
