Inclusive Practices, Inclusive Pedagogies, a new book jointly commissioned by the Council for Higher Education in Art & Design (CHEAD), United Kingdom Arts & Design Institutions Association (UKADIA), Arts Council England (ACE) and the Art Design Media Subject Centre (ADM-HEA) is now available. Authored and edited by Dr Dipti Bhagat and Dr Peter O’Neil, the book draws on research into widening participation practices in higher education art & design and includes extracts from a range of work by practitioners and researchers.
Launched at Sadler’s Wells Theatre with a keynote speech from Wes Streeting, Chief Executive of the Helena Kennedy Foundation, the book draws upon and celebrates good practice in art, design and media widening participation initiatives, whilst at the same time identifying the challenges that remain, most particularly in the forthcoming period when disincentives for students with non-traditional backgrounds for entry to HE may become stronger in the new fee environment.
Speaking at the launch Wes Streeting said:
This book is an important contribution to the debate and points out how important art and design is to individuals wishing to pursue their creative interests and subsequently join the UK’s Creative Industries. I very much welcome this book and congratulate everyone involved in its production.
Editors Dipti and Peter note:
We are particularly pleased to have worked on this volume as it has been an excellent opportunity to promote the importance of creating inclusive pedagogies and inclusive cultures, which lie at the heart of our own pedagogic practices.
We are enormously grateful to Dipti and Peter and all the other researchers whose work features in the book. Whilst there remains work to do in widening participation in our subjects, the book reminds us of the commitment of staff to widen access and of the significant steps taken across a range of further and higher education institutions in art, design and media education in support of widening access to our subjects.
The publication is now available to download from the ukadia website: www.ukadia.ac.uk. Please contact Kirsty Morris, k.r.morris@arts.ac.uk, if you would like a printed copy.
