The CETLD Student Placement Programme built on findings from the baseline research programme into how HE Design students and tutors learn from museums and their collections

Project leader: Catherine Speight

The Student Placement Programme offered students from the University of Brighton and the Royal College of Art, the opportunity to work behind the scenes in a museum or archive at one of the four CETLD partner institutions: V&A, the University of Brighton ‘Design Archives’, the Royal College of Art and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Abstract

The CETLD Student Placement Programme built on findings from the baseline research programme into how HE Design students and tutors learn from museums and their collections (Fisher, 2007). This research identified a desire from both groups for behind the scenes access, knowledge of curatorial expertise and exposure to work in a museum or archive environment.

The aim of the Student Placement Programme was to encourage HE design students to conduct research and pursue academic interests outside their elected discipline. A further aim was to provide a workable interface for the delivery of placements across the partnership.Research into student and tutor interest in behind the scenes access is the subject of a complementary research project led by CETLD Research Fellow Beth Cook.

The project included:

  • Creation of 10 student placements across the partnership
  • Contribution by students to project work in the host institution
  • Creation of Student Placement Programme Toolkit for CETLD partners
  • Research and evaluation conducted into project supervisors’ and students’ experiences of the programm

The following reports were produced from the programme (see Related files):

  • Joint Project Research Strategy - The joint research and evaluation strategy provided a framework for the research conducted into Behind the Scenes at the Museum Project and Student Placement Programme.
  • Scoping Report – This report explored the context for museum and archive placements acrorss the CETLD partnership and outlined important issues surrounding the design and delivery of the CETLD Student Placement Programme.
  • Interim and Final Project Reports – These reports reflect on work in progress and findings generated by the evaluation of the CETLD Student Placement Programme.
